1 Corinthians 10:12-13, “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
Beloved, we have been on a theme the last few weeks looking at God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility. We have learned that God will keep us from stumbling but that we need to keep ourselves in the love of God. Hence we need both sovereignty and responsibility in our lives.
In the above Scriptural verses we learn that God will provide a way out of temptation but that we also must take heed to ourselves as 1 Corinthians 10:12 says, “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.” So how do we take heed to ourselves? To take heed means: to mind; to regard with care; to take notice of; to attend to; and to observe. In other words we are to internally look at ourselves and ask ourselves if we are placing ourselves in a position of spiritual danger. For example, if we had a previous problem with alcohol- should we visit a bar; if we have a problem with lust should we watch an r-rated movie; if we eat too many donuts should we continually visit Dunkin Donuts? So we take heed of ourselves by not placing ourselves in a position of temptation. I have always said that the best way to overcome temptation is to completely avoid it.
But sometimes temptation comes upon us. This is where 1 Corinthians 10:13 comes into play. If we have taken heed to ourselves but still find ourselves in a position of temptation, we can know that the Lord, in His sovereignty, will provide, “the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” In a sense, we do what we can and God is always faithful to do what only He can do and we can have victory over temptation!
I pray that you will have a blessed day! I love you and I will be praying for you!
