The Word of Grace Devotion for the Week of March 14, 2016
Numbers 21:8-9, “And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.”
Beloved, as we are a couple of weeks away from celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we focus this week on the cross that saves. In the OT Book of Numbers we have an interesting precursor to the cross in the form of a fiery serpent on a pole. The fiery serpent was God’s method of deliverance during the incident recorded in Numbers 21.
As the Israelites were continuing their way through the wilderness they once again began to murmur against the Lord, Numbers 21:5- “And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.”
In response to their complaining the Lord sent fiery serpents to bite some of the Israelites from which some died. Moses cried out for the Israelites and the Lord responded with Numbers 21:8- “And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”
It does seem kind of weird that a bronze serpent could save but we know it was a type of Jesus on the cross when Jesus mentions the bronze serpent in John 3:14, “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up.” Therefore, just as anyone who was bitten by a serpent could be healed by looking to the bronze serpent Moses lifted up, so can anyone look to Jesus, who was lifted up on the cross, to be spiritually healed, delivered, and saved.
Beloved, our response then is to make certain that we have looked to Jesus for our salvation and then to lift up Jesus in our lives so that others can see the Jesus who saves! !
I pray that you will have a blessed week! I love you and I will be praying for you!
In Jesus Name,
