Lay Down Your Life
John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
Beloved, these verses remind us of what our Lord Jesus did for every one of us by dying on the cross. He took every sin upon Himself, and paid the price for us to stand in righteousness before God. This is something none of us could have done, as, unlike us, Jesus was completely without sin. But quite apart from that, I do not think anyone would be willing to pay this price for the whole of mankind.
Jesus was able to lay down His life for us. In my understanding that means He let go of all personal rights, privileges and comforts. It means He lived a life completely devoted to others and their well being; always putting His own needs behind those of others.
So, as we remember those who have died for our Country on this Memorial Day, I am reminded that we also should be laying down our lives on a daily basis.
None of us could do what Jesus did, but there are many ways we can lay down our lives for others. We can lay our lives down, for example, by reaching out to those in need, by the giving of our time, talent and treasure for the benefit of others.
Beloved, God has uniquely gifted each of us to meet needs in different areas of the body of Christ. We must be involved in other people’s lives in order for this to occur.
So as we eat our grilled burgers, and lick our ice cream cones may we also consider how we are to serve the Lord by serving one another! May we ask ourselves, “Lord, how do you desire me to lay down my life today? Jesus, may you increase and may I decrease as I seek to love you and serve you…all in response to the great gift of eternal life you freely gave to me!
I pray that you will have a blessed Memorial Day and week! I love you and I will be praying for you!
