The Word of Grace Devotion for the Week of March 19, 2018
Once For All
Hebrews 7:26–27, “For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.” ESV
Beloved, living under the Law was no joke. What was required was one sacrifice after another sacrifice. A bull here, a goat there, then a lamb or a turtledove or two pigeons or some grain or flour. The list was endless. As I was reading this morning’s devotion through the OneYearBibleOnline, I was struck by the magnitude of the sacrifices. It was an immense undertaking and required by the Law. After mentioning the various offerings required at the feasts Numbers 29:39 says, “These you shall offer to the Lord at your appointed feasts, in addition to your vow offerings and your freewill offerings, for your burnt offerings, and for your grain offerings, and for your drink offerings, and for your peace offerings.” ESV
I took note of the phrase, “in addition to.” Mercy, the law was one requirement after another with no end in sight. I was overwhelmed by the offerings and sacrifices that the Israelites had to offer and then thankful that the sacrifice of Jesus Christ was once for all. No more need for bulls, or lambs or turtledoves to be sacrificed. Jesus paid it all!
In a couple of weeks we will soon focus on Christ’s death and resurrection: His once for all sacrifice. With this in mind I want to encourage you to invite someone to church. Invite someone who struggles with trying to earn their way to heaven in hopes that they may come to the understanding that Jesus paid it all!
I pray that you will have a blessed week! I love you and I will be praying for you!
In Jesus’ Name,
