The Word of Grace Devotion for the Week of February 5, 2018
Rest and Trust
Exodus 23:10-12, “For six years you shall sow your land and gather in its yield, 11but the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave the beasts of the field may eat. You shall do likewise with your vineyard, and with your olive orchard. 12“Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; that your ox and your donkey may have rest, and the son of your servant woman, and the alien, may be refreshed." ESV
Beloved, Scripture tells us in Genesis 2:2–3, “And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.”
This day of rest was established well before the law and given to man as Jesus said in Mark 2:27, “And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” Unfortunately, the Sabbath has taken on many different applications other than rest.
But the Lord spoke to me this morning about rest and trust. In Exodus 23 we find the Lord commanding the Israelites to allow the land to take a year of rest. In doing so the Israelites would also rest but this required trust.
We can hear the Israelites saying, “Where are we going to get food and who is going to pay the bills?” We say the same things. We do not rest because we do not trust. We also do not give because we do not trust.
We need to understand that when we rest, we trust that the Lord will provide for us while we rest. By the way, the Israelites did not follow the Lord's command and it ultimately resulted in them owing the Lord 70 years. He took it out from them as He exiled them to Babylon. So do you owe the Lord any time?
Beloved, I pray that you will have a blessed week! I love you and I will be praying for you and for all of us that we would rest and trust in the Lord!
Resting and Trusting in Him,
