"Beware of Idolatry!" Psalm 135:15-18 on this week's Word of Grace Devotion with Pastor Joe Marquez.
The Word of Grace Devotion for June 17, 2019
Beware of idolatry!
Psalm 135:15-18, "The idols of the nations are silver and gold, The work of men’s hands. 16They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see; 17They have ears, but they do not hear; Nor is there any breath in their mouths. 18Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them." NKJV
Beloved, while we may not have a statue of gold in our living room that we bow down to; if we worship possessions, people or pesos above God then we are idolaters.
Boice said, “If we worship things that people produce, we will become as impotent and empty as those things, but if we worship God, by the grace of God we will become like God.”
The idols that the Psalmist mentions in Psalm 135 were made of materials that people prized, silver and gold. The pursuit of possessions has long been a thorn in the side of a believer. So often wanting more possessions takes us away from wanting more of God.
But it is not only possessions that we worship, we also worship people. So often we place those in our lives above God and we make idols out of them. If we lose them we are forever mad at God. Understand, the root of this anger is idolatry.
Finally we worship pesos (money). We somehow forget that everything that we possess has been given to us from the Lord. It is not ours, we are merely stewards of everything God has placed into our hands and God can choose to take it away at any time as Job says in Job 1:21, “And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”
Beloved, do not worship possessions or people or pesos. Worship God! Put Him first in all of your endeavors and trust Him. Remember we serve a living God that created us, we did not create Him!
I pray that you will have a blessed week! I love you and I will be praying for you!
