The Word of Grace Devotion for the Week of May 14, 2018
Better To Obey
1 Samuel 15:22, "And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. 23For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you from being king.” ESV
Beloved, King Saul had been told by Samuel to attack the Amalekites and to destroy everything and everyone, “Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’” (1 Samuel 15:3)
Unfortunately, King Saul kept what was good in his eyes, “But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction.” (1 Samuel 15:9)
This partial obedience is how we often serve the Lord. The Lord plainly says in His Word to do or not to something and we perform a version of it to our liking. We need to remember that partial obedience is not obedience at all!
The problem is, like King Saul, we think that we have performed what God has commanded, “And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, “Blessed be you to the Lord. I have performed the commandment of the Lord.” 14 And Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen that I hear?” (1 Samuel 15:13-14)
Beloved, King Saul’s partial obedience was no obedience. Our partial obedience is no obedience at all but rather disobedience. The Lord desires that we obey completely and considers partial obedience as rebellion, iniquity, idolatry and outright rejection of His Word!
Beloved, do not settle for partially following the Lord. Follow Him entirely out of love like John 14:15 says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
I pray that you will have a blessed week! I love you and I will be praying for you!
